Cookie policy
The short version
Road.me doesn't use cookies. Instead, it keeps a few small items in your browser’s storage so the site remembers your settings between visits. The same privacy rules apply to them as to cookies. This page lists each one: what it holds, why, and for how long.
With your consent, we also count return visits, to see what to improve. Without it, we count visits for one day only, and nothing is stored in your browser for that. Either way, we note the site you came from (only its name) and any campaign tags in the page’s address, such as which ad network sent you.
Necessary — always on
The site needs these to work as you set it up. They stay in your browser and are not used for statistics or advertising.
| Name | What it holds | How long |
|---|---|---|
roadme_theme | The light or dark theme you chose. | Until you clear it |
roadme_cur | The currency you chose for prices. | Until you clear it |
roadme_form | Your vehicle and fuel settings: type, size, fuel, consumption, toll tag. Never a place or a route. | Until you clear it |
roadme_veh | Whether you keep the vehicle panel open. | Until you clear it |
roadme_ev | Your answers about charging an electric car. | Until you clear it |
roadme_dog | Whether you travel with a dog, for the rules on the way. | Until you clear it |
roadme_near_recent | The kinds of places you looked for under “Near me”, such as fuel or toilets. Never the places themselves. | Until you clear it |
roadme_rates | Today’s exchange rates, so that prices appear quickly. | Replaced when the rates change |
roadme_app_banner | That you closed the banner about the app. | Until you clear it |
roadme_geo_quiet | That you said no to sharing your position, so we do not ask again. | One week |
roadme_vid, roadme_vid_at | A random number for this browser, and the day it was made. It protects the calculator from too many requests a minute. With your consent, it is also sent with our statistics. | Twelve months, then a new one |
roadme_stats, roadme_stats_at | Your answer about statistics, and its date. | Twelve months, then we ask again |
Statistics — only with your consent
If you choose “Accept all”, or switch on Statistics in the settings, the random number for this browser is sent with our statistics. This lets us see that one browser came back.
After ninety days, our server removes the random number for your browser from the statistics; what remains is no longer linked to you, and we keep it. It keeps no IP address and no exact position. From a route or a search it notes only the nearest town or village within 30 km, and the country, which Cloudflare reads from your IP address.
Without your consent
If you choose “Reject all”, or do not answer, each visit is counted for one day, without identifying you. Our server makes a one-way code from your IP address, your browser type and the site, mixed with a random value that changes every day and is deleted after a day. Nothing is stored in your browser’s storage for this, and nothing is read from it. Your IP address is not kept. The next day, the same person counts as a new visitor.
Other sites
Road.me loads no advertising, no tracking scripts and no cookies from other companies. The map, its library and the prices come from our own servers. When you open a link to another site, such as an app store or a ferry company, that site’s own rules apply.
Change or clear your choice
You can change your answer at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page. To remove everything, delete the data for road.me in your browser’s settings. Read our full privacy policy.
